Situated on over 500 acres of land along the Hudson, on the grounds of two historic riverside estates, Bard’s idyllic campus in upstate New York is the stuff of an Edith Wharton-inspired fantasy. The school is credited with starting the first low-residency MFA program, with students gathering for eight-week summer sessions that split up their independent study, in total lasting under three years. The flexible schedule makes it easy for influential artists like Adam Pendleton, Beatriz Santiago Muñoz, and Emily Jacir to lend their time as professors. Sadie Benning and Paul Chan are both part of the “Bard Mafia,” the nickname for the school’s influential alumni network.
Academy of Art University, San Francisco
The Roski School of Art and Design offers minors in art and design as supplements to major fields of specialization in other departments and schools for students whose academic programs do not permit the opportunity to pursue one of the school’s regular degree options. There are seven intensive studio minors — in painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture, two-dimensional studies and intermedia arts — and four interdisciplinary minors in communication design, 3-D design, performance art and visual narrative art. To that end, we teach and practice a moral, ethical and aesthetic responsibility to society and the natural world in the design of the built environment. The School of Architecture empowers students to critically engage the complexities of society and the natural environment by instilling the fundamental principles of design and inspiring a spirit of exploration and creative experimentation in shaping the built environment. Doctor of Architecture and Master of Architecture degree programs may require a non-accredited undergraduate degree in architecture for admission. However, the non-accredited degree is not, by itself, recognized as an accredited degree. There is no exact number of how many college museums are being renovated or even how many exist nationwide. The Association of Academic Museums and Galleries is conducting a census to get a more accurate count, but its latest estimate is that there are 659 such museums in the United States.

It ran on Cartoon Network for many seasons and was cool because I got to make my own mini films. I was inspired to play the violin at age 6 after watching a live performance in Branson, Missouri. My mom encouraged me to pursue it and after my first lesson I knew that the violin was going to be my passion. As I studied the violin, I began to branch out from my classical training and started... As an artist, you realize that everything you’ve learned in your whole art life will come back at some point; it has for me. It’s been amazing how my design training at CalArts has helped me in editorial cartooning for print.

California Polytechnic State University is fully accredited by WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). All programs provide access the Visual Arts Complex, which house state-of-the-art facilities, labs, and equipment; workshops; internship and study abroad opportunities; and seminars. If you're looking to pursue a creative path but not sure where to start, you’re in the right place. Get to know some of our remarkable students as they work toward turning their passions into their professions. For your MFA Art capstone, you’ll show your work in a solo thesis exhibition, mounted under the program director’s guidance, in the spring of your second year at Roski. The exhibition is installed in the Graduate Gallery—a 2,000-square-foot space with three professionally constructed moveable walls, a lighting grid, a professional mounted high resolution video projector and roll-up door for installation of large-scale works.
The program consists of student-selected studio courses, with emphases on painting and drawing, ceramics, sculpture, and photography and video. Nestled in downtown Chicago is the School of the Art Institute Chicago (SAIC), a private art school that works in tandem with the Art Institute of Chicago museum. Tuition is on the more expensive side at $54,530 but 100% of students receive grant aid up to $18,290. And though Pratt’s tuition is on the higher end, at roughly $57,599 per year, over three-quarters of admitted students (78% to be precise) receive about $25,278 in aid. But, one needs to consider the cost of living in New York City, which is one of the most expensive in the nation. While the absence of a school museum or gallery may limit on-campus exhibition and curatorial opportunities, New York City is replete with world-class institutions for students to explore and seek out internships and other opportunities.
The schools encourage interdepartmental collaboration, the creation of hybrid forms, and broad critical understanding. The Department of Art and Art History at Stanford offers four undergraduate major options, including art history, art practice, and film & media, all of which can be pursued as minors. One joint major, art practice plus computer science, allows art students working in technology-focused media to acquire the necessary context and skills to expand the scope of their work. Besides its drawing and painting program, Laguna College of Art and Design provides a strongly practical, technology-focused array of majors, including animation, entertainment design, experimental animation, game art, graphic design & digital media, and illustration. The school’s unofficial tagline is “No starving artists,” which reflects part of the school’s mission, which is to ensure that their students get guidance in professional development and find employment after graduation. Students will also have the benefit of living in the beautiful city of Savannah, known for its historic cobblestone squares, and manicured parks with trees covered in Spanish Moss.
With small class sizes, a great amount of grant aid available, and a location in a bustling midwestern city, Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD) is a great place to attend art school. Costs for an architectural education are similar to, though somewhat higher than, other programs in the university. An academic exposure to both rural and urban settings through class field trips, the integration of computer technology, networking, digital fabrication, printing as well as other program enhancements are an important part of an architect's education. In order to meet this need and help defer costs of the field trips, computer integration, lecture series and program enhancements, a Program Fee is assessed to each student in the environmental design and architectural programs that reflects the student's degree status in the program. Students are required to purchase their own personal notebook computer, which meets the specifications of the School of Architecture, during the second year of the Environmental Design undergraduate program. For years, Yale has topped nearly every annual survey of the best MFA programs in the nation because, well, it’s Yale—one of the oldest and most prestigious academic institutions in America.
Developed to foster creative opportunities for young people within the creative hub of Los Angeles, any senior-level student from Los Angeles County who plans to enroll at Otis College is eligible for this $40,000 scholarship award. Summer Youth Camps are a mainstay at Otis College, and we’re excited to see them grow in popularity each year. Our weeklong day camps offer fun opportunities for young artists to discover a variety of mediums including drawing, painting, printmaking, and more in a creative and collaborative setting.
Graduates of the Design and other programs at San Francisco State University are routinely hired at companies such as Google, Wells Fargo, Apple, Kaiser Permanente, and Oracle. Graduates are Brand Managers, Packaging Designers, User Experience Designers, Exhibit Designers, Creative Directors, Layout Artists, Book Designers, Publication Designers, Art Directors, and Web Designers. Program graduates have also gone on to launch their own studios and freelance businesses. Laguna College of Art and Design serves around 770 students enrolled in dozens of degree and minor programs.
In addition to its top-ranked academic programs, the College also serves residents of the Greater Los Angeles region through its ArtCenter Extension programs - a highly regarded series of year-round educational programs for all ages and levels of experience. Two students in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, Maxine Roeder, BFA ’24/AB ’25, and Julia Yuan, BFA ’25, have won the Fashion Scholarship Fund’s case study competition. The nonprofit, which focuses on fashion-oriented education and workforce development across the United States, awarded 130 scholarships from an applicant pool of 1200.
To enhance the degree and develop skills in advertising or book arts, students may select electives from course clusters in these areas. Examples include Advertising Workshop, Copywriting, Bookmaking Projects, Ideation Bootcamp, On Screen Production & Concepts, Introduction to Letterpress, Bookstructures, and Advertising Design Studio. All CalArts students have the opportunity to enroll in the internship program, study abroad, and complete a portfolio of their best work.
All Roski graduate programs are housed in the new, state-of-the-art, Roski Graduate Building in the heart of the Los Angeles Arts District. Established in 1929 and serving more than 7,000 students, Academy of Art is of the nation’s largest private art and design schools. Divided into 22 schools, Academy of Art University offers more than 129 degree programs in 40+ areas of study. Briefly defined, architecture is the art and science of designing buildings that provide appropriate accommodation for human activities. Professional practice requires a person with the unique combination of creative ability, technical knowledge, human understanding, and administrative skill. However, the Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Design degree by itself does not qualify students to become registered architects.
Stanford University
Although small—admitting only a handful of students per year—major artists working in this increasingly popular field have featured as faculty there, from Jen Delos Reyes to Shannon Jackson, Pablo Helguera, and Tania Bruguera. Created in 2009, MIT’s Program in Art, Culture and Technology (ACT) is the newest on our list. (We’re cheating every so slightly here, as the program is technically a Master of Science, not an MFA).
Course examples include Fundamentals of Digital Imaging – Illustrator, Graphic Design 1-2, Computer Imaging, Animation for Motion Graphics, Typography, Communication Design 1-2, Motion Graphics + Visual Effects, and History of Graphic Design. Established in 1969, the Graphic Design Program at San Jose State University (SJSU) is the only program of its kind in a public university in Silicon Valley. Housed in the College of Humanities and the Arts’ Department of Design, the program features a mandatory internship, opportunities to collaborate with students in other disciplines, classes and workshops led by studio professionals, funded research, and community engagement projects. University of California Los Angeles has played a pivotal role in the formation of nearly 200 startup companies to date. Established in 1919, the school serves 45,900 students enrolled in more than 250 programs across 12 professional schools and UCLA College.
RISD offers BA’s and BFA’s in 16 majors from textiles to sculpture, glass to photography. In addition, the program offers undergraduate the option of concentrations (which is similar to the Minor, or secondary specialization, at other universities). ArtCenter offers 11 undergraduate and 10 graduate degrees in a wide array of industrial design, visual and applied arts disciplines, as well as minors for undergraduate students in Business, Creative Writing, Material Science, Research, and Social Innovation. Founded in 1826, MICA is the oldest continuously degree-granting college of art in the U.S. That’s no simple feat given that the school has burned down twice since then, the first time on February 7, 1835, and again (weirdly enough, also on February 7th) during the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904. The Chronicle of Higher Education listed MICA as one of the nation’s top producers of Fulbright Fellows among specialty schools and the institution counts artists like Jeff Koons, Elaine Hamilton, Lesley Dill, and Broad City’s Abbi Jacobson among its former students. Courses of study include Community Arts—focused on “art practice as a means of civic empowerment, community organizing and development, activism, education and more”—as well as filmmaking, graphic design, and a low-residency summer program for Studio Art.
US News & World Report named VCU among the the top two public university art schools (tied with UCLA, also on our list), helped in part by its robust Sculpture and Extended Media program, currently helmed by Matt King. Its foundry and metal fabrication shop are state-of-the-art, which is perfect if you’re looking to work with stone, metals, or other heavy-duty industrial materials (much like alumni, and MacArthur “genius” grant winners, Tara Donovan and Teresita Fernández have in the past). Art schools are an excellent choice for those who want to focus solely on their artistic career and not dilute their focus with the requirements of a more traditional college or university. This interaction is one of the primary reasons that students with serious aspirations in the arts are drawn to art schools.
